Joseph

Joseph
(first century)
   Saint.
Joseph was the husband of the Virgin mary. In the Gospels he is described as a carpenter and as a descendant of King David. He was betrothed to Mary at the time of Jesus’s conception, but was encouraged by God in a dream to stay with her. Jesus grew up in Joseph’s house in Nazareth with brothers and sisters. According to Christian legend, he was considerably older than Mary. His cult grew up in the Eastern Church, based largely on the apocryphal Infancy Gospel of james, and it appeared in the West only in the fifteenth century. In 1870 Pius IX declared Joseph to be the Patron of the Universal Church. Today he is a popular saint and is constantly represented in Nativity plays and crib scenes.
